Since today was “draw your art supplies,” and since art supplies are colorful I decided to use watercolors. That and I got this mixed media sketchbook insanely on sale and am trying to improve my watercolor (and a little bit of gouache) skills. It is definitely more illustration-y then what I’ve done so far.
Watercolor always seems to have a life of its own when I’m using it. When you have too much water down it almost appears to be growing on the paper. Which is cool to watch, sometimes, not always. I am still learning how to use it. I usually use it coloring book style, drawing in ink first and then filling in with color, but people do some very realistic stuff with them. For example the hyperrealism in the watercolor pieces done by artist Marlin Rotach. Can you believe that this is done with watercolor? It looks like oil to me. Or a photograph.
Incredible, right?
